Awards


Trillium Award
Presented in recognition of significant contribution to the advancement of the Society and in turn the profession of Medical Laboratory Technology in Ontario.

The criteria for the Trillium Award includes:
  • High profile within the medical laboratory technology community, at any level.
  • Promotes active involvement by other technologists.
  • Sets a high professional standard as a role model.
  • Must be a member of the Ontario Society of Medical Technologists.
  • Both the quality and quantity of contribution to the profession will be considered.
  • Not necessarily awarded each year.
  • The President shall present the award at the Annual General Meeting.
The award includes a certificate, the Trillium gold ring, and an honorary lifetime membership with the OSMT.

Richard Lafferty "Excellence in Writing" Award:

Presented to a person that has made an outstanding contribution to the OSMT Advocate.


MLT Student Award
The award is given to the graduating full-time clinical year student who has achieved distinguished academic status and who possesses the following attributes:
  • Outstanding performance both in theoretical and practical work.
  • Endeavours to reach a deeper level of knowledge and understanding than required.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates reliability through attendance and punctuality.
  • Has earned the respect of his/her peers through cooperation and assistance.
  • Demonstrates maturity through a positive attitude.
This award includes a $100 honorarium and a certificate.

MLA/T Student Award
The award is given to the graduating full-time student who has achieved distinguished academic status and who possesses the following attributes:

  • Candidates must successfully pass the OSMT MLA/T exam in order to be eligible.
This award includes a $100 honorarium and a certificate.

Jim Braidwood Outstanding Professional Award
The Jim Braidwood Outstanding Professional Award is given to the MLT or MLA/T who is highly regarded by professional colleagues for improving work life and professional practice through his/her passion for shared learning and development.

The Jim Braidwood Outstanding Professional Award recipient:
  • Promotes and supports the sharing of new ideas and learning among colleagues.
  • Collaborates to solve problems and improve workplace practices and morale.
  • Is highly regarded and respected by his/her colleagues for attitudes and behaviours that support an evolving and optimistic work environment.
  • Must be a member of the OSMT in good standing.
  • Pursues avenues to engage, inform and educate peers for the benefit of individuals, the organization, and the profession.
A framed certificate of recognition will be presented to the Jim Braidwood Outstanding Professional Award recipient at the annual OSMT Conference, if possible.

Bursaries

Medical Laboratory Technologist Bursary
An OSMT Bursary of $1,000 will be awarded to a full-time student pursing post-secondary education in an Ontario medical laboratory technology/science program.

Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician Bursary
Two OSMT Bursaries of $500 (Jan & June) each are awarded to students pursuing post-secondary education in a medical laboratory assistant/technician program.

Scholarships

Ontario Association of Medical Laboratories (OAML)
$1,000.00 scholarships/bursaries are available to assist Ontario students who have completed at least one year in a full-time program leading to certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist or to a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

OAML Scholarships are available to Ontario students who have completed at least one year in full-time programs of study leading to certification as an MLT or to a Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory sciences.  For the 2016-2017 academic year, five scholarships of $1,000 were awarded.

Johnson Inc.
Scholarships are to assist students beginning post-secondary studies following the completion of high school. All Canadian residents completing high school and who are beginning post-secondary education are eligible to apply for a Johnson Scholarship. Annually Johnson will award 50 scholarships, each valued at $1,000 to students attending a post-secondary educational institution in Canada on completion of the graduating year of high school.

Completed application forms must be submitted by August 31st and must be accompanied by a transcript of final year credits.
