Advocacy Efforts
The OSMT represents medical laboratory professionals in Ontario on a variety of committees including: CORPHA, Coalition of Ontario Regulated Health Professions’ Associations (CORHPA), Allied Health Professional Development Fund and IQMH Stakeholders Forum to name a few.

The OSMT monitors and reviews any proposed legislative changes that will affect the laboratory profession and responds in the best interests of its membership. This includes communications with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and other government Ministries, with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), and with educators and employers.

The OSMT visits laboratories across the province to understand the challenges that lab professionals are experiencing.

The OSMT has been working with schools and lab programs to increase the profile of the profession.

The OSMT promotes and participates in National Medical Laboratory Week across the province.

The Board of Directors, which is a representation of the membership across the province meet quarterly to discuss issues and make recommendations on how to impact the profession.

In 2018 the focus for the OSMT is being discussed and re-designed. Some items being considered are:

• increasing the profile of the laboratory within our province
• increasing the appreciation of all roles in the laboratory
• dealing with the shortage and overage of lab professionals in a variety of settings
• understanding how the lab will function if the expected retirements occur
