The
Ontario Society of Medical Technologists is a professional society for
Medical Laboratory Technologists and Medical Laboratory
Assistants/Technicians in the province of Ontario. The Society does not
maintain an employment bureau, grant permission to practice or evaluate
credentials for employment purposes.
Legislation in Ontario
requires medical laboratory technologists to be members of the College of
Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO). Inquiries on entry to
practice requirements should be addressed to:
The
Registrar College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of
Ontario 36 Toronto St., Suite 905 Toronto, ON M5J
2C5 Phone: 416-861-9605 Website: http://www.cmlto.com/
Please
contact the CMLTO for the requirements needed to be certified as a medical
technologist.
OSMT
MEMBERSHIP
Membership with the OSMT falls
into two categories, Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and Medical
Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T). To be an MLT member it is
mandatory to be registered with the College of Medical Laboratory
Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO). To be an MLA/T member, you must be
certified by an approved certification program, which requires writing a
certification exam. Registration deadline for the OSMT MLA/T Exam
application is generally 5 months prior to the exam date. You must
be in Ontario at the time of the exam to be eligible. We recommend
foreign applicants to give serious consideration before applying as we
have many difficulties with mailing documents by deadline dates and also
having foreign applicants actually arriving to write the exam because of
immigration problems. Information on OSMT MLA/T Certification can be
found on our MLA/T Exam page.
If you are interested in
membership, we have a subscriber category for membership, which entitles
you to receive our magazine, “Advocate”. The cost is $120 Canadian
per year plus extra postage charges for mailing internationally. We
also have an "Affiliate" category for individuals or organizations who
wish to have a formal association with a professional body. Both of
these categories are non-voting and do not include liability insurance
coverage.
If you are interested in
membership in our Society, please contact our membership coordinator at
lvoong@osmt.org.

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY
NEW: A pilot program is being
offered in early 2008 on "Understanding the Canadian Health Care System,
Culture and Context: An Orientation Program for Internationally Trained
Health Professionals"
| Orientation to Canadian Health
Care Systems, Culture and Context is designed for nurses,
occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, medical
radiation technologists, and medical laboratory technologists at any
stage of licensure. This five week course will provide learners with
a deepened understanding of how the Canadian Health Care System is
organized, what Canadian patients expect from their health care
providers, and how to communicate with patients and caregivers, as
well as provide an opportunity to meet other newly arrived health
care professionals in a supportive learning environment.

ASSESSMENT
SERVICES
How do I get my
foreign credentials assessed? If you are a newcomer to
Ontario and have a diploma or degree from another country, you may need to
have your academic credentials recognized in order to help you join the
labour market, enter a training or educational program, or get recognition
of professional training. You will therefore need an assessment of your
academic credentials and a comparison of those credentials to Ontario
educational standards.

Citizenship and
Immigration Canada has created a new office to help internationally
trained individuals find the information and services they need to
get their training and credentials assessed and recognized in
Canada. Canada’s Foreign Credentials Referral Office (FCRO)
can be accessed at http://www.credentials.gc.ca/.
Service Canada also
provides information and referral services in Canada toll-free at
1-888-854-1805.
By the fall 2007, 320
walk-in Service Canada Centres will be available throughout Canada
to provide one-stop, easy access to a growing range of programs and
services to individuals who are already in Canada.
The OSMT wishes to thank
the Government of Canada for this new and much needed initiative to
help integrate internationally trained individuals bring their
diverse skills and experience to
Canada. |
