The Process for Hosting a PD Session

Please select a workshop/session you think would benefit the people at your laboratory and surrounding laboratories.  A list of available topics is listed above. (If there are other topics that may be useful but are not included on our list, please inform the OSMT office).

After selecting a topic, contact us and we can advise you as to the facility requirements, e.g. room size, AV equipment, etc.  To keep costs reasonable we try to use no-cost or low-cost facilities whenever possible.  If the appropriate facilities are available we then make preliminary arrangements with the host and the presenter for a mutually convenient date to hold the session.  Most of our PD sessions are about one day long and are normally given on a Saturday (or Sunday) but some are shorter or can be modified to be given in the evening.  Weekends are usually best however as the presenters have full-time jobs and cannot always get away.

You may wish to make preliminary calls to see how many people might be interested.  If it looks as if there will be enough registrants, the OSMT will then advertise and send registration forms to laboratories in the surrounding area.  Ideally we need about 2 months to organize a workshop/session.  The numbers required vary depending upon the type of workshop and the costs associated with it.  If there are not enough registrants by the deadline date established, the workshop/session can be cancelled, but we don't want this to happen very often.

The fees vary depending upon length and whether it is a wet or a dry workshop.  Generally speaking, registration fees run between $75 to $100 for OSMT members and $100 to $125 for non-members for a one-day PD session.

If you would like to see one or more of these workshops delivered to a laboratory in your area, please contact the OSMT office.

  • Benefits the Volunteer Mentor by providing opportunities to learn about other countries and cultures as well as the practices and standards in other countries
  • Provides the foreign-trained with information about the regulations and requirements of their profession in Canada
