OSMT Bursary Programs
An OSMT Bursary of $1,000 will be awarded to a full-time student pursing post-secondary education in an Ontario medical laboratory technology/science program. Two OSMT Bursaries of $500 each are awarded to students pursuing post-secondary education in a medical laboratory assistant/technician program. 2017 MLA/T CERTIFICATION EXAM
The Spring MLA/T Certification Examination will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2017.
Deadline for applications is March 17, 2017.
Applications for the Spring 2017 MLA/T Certification exam are available at the OSMT office and on the OSMT website MLA/T Certification pages. All interested candidates should contact the OSMT office @ 1-800-461-6768.
The OSMT Invites its Members to Participate in Renewal of the MLA/T Certification Exam
The OSMT is committed to ensuring that MLA/T training and testing is up-to-date and relevant to the current scope of practice in Ontario. As part of this commitment, the OSMT continually renews the MLA/T Certification Exam.
We are assembling panels of experienced MLTs and MLA/Ts to review selected questions from the exam and draft new questions. The time commitment consists of a few hours training at home on writing exam questions followed by a one-day session at the OSMT office.
Scope of Commitment:
Read the manual on writing exam questions
Identify reference materials for your selected section of the exam
Participate in a one day exam writing session
MLT or MLA/T with minimum of 5 years experience
Expertise in one or more laboratory technology specialties
Member of the OSMT

Training sessions planned for the Electronic Health Library
The Allied Health Professional Development Fund (AHPDF) has invested in continuing education by establishing an Electronic Health Library (EHL). The EHL includes thousands of peer reviewed journals and is available to nine health professions, including practicing MLTs. Training sessions will occur throughout the year. Searching the EBSCO databases of the Electronic Health Library
This session will demonstrate how to use DynaMed, an evidence-based clinical reference tool updated daily, and how to find full-text journal articles from MEDLINE with Full Text, CINAHL with Full Text databases to which you have access through the Allied Health Professional Development Fund. An experienced medical librarian will show you the difference between DynaMed and the full-text databases and explain how each source can be used to answer patient care, teaching and research questions. The capability to print, email and save results for immediate or future use will be reviewed as will the ability to set up alerts.

Bridging Program and Continuing Education for laboratory technologists
The NBSMLT, in partnership with the Community College of New Brunswick, has recently launched a bridging program for internationally-educated laboratory technologists available in both French and English. The program is mostly online, but also offers a 90 hour face-to-face training and a clinical placement. It is a CE program with continuous enrollment.
Interested technologists can register for the individual courses if they choose and courses are also open to Canadian-educated technologists for professional development or re-entry to practice.
