The OSMT Board monitors and reviews any proposed legislative changes that will affect the laboratory profession and responds in the best interests of its membership. This includes communications with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and other government Ministries, with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), and with educators and employers.

Certification of Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians
The OSMT is the official certifying body for Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians (MLA/Ts) in the province of Ontario.  The Society's certification program validates that an individual has attained a recognized level of standards and training through OSMT approved educational institutions. With the use of an examination process, the Society has granted MLA/T certification to over 11,000 individuals.  Certification by the OSMT is regarded as a mandatory requirement of employment by many Ontario laboratories.
