MLT Scope of Practice Review

The Health Professions Advisory Council (HPRAC) has completed its recommendations on the scope of practice for medical laboratory technology which are covered in Chapter 5 of HPRAC’s report Critical Link:  Transforming and Supporting Patient Care.  The report can be accessed by linking to:
http://www.hprac.org/en/projects/resources/HPRACCriticalLinksEnglishJan_09.pdf

The Minster has invited responses to the Critical Links report from the stakeholders, the professions and the public.

While the CMLTO, OSMT, and CSMLS were all disappointed that none of our proposed changes are being recommended by HPRAC, the OSMT has a taken a somewhat different perspective of the processes and the outcomes.  An explanation has been provided in a separate letter that the OSMT has sent to Minister Caplan.

HealthForceOntario provides support for an
interprofessional collaboration OSMT project

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the OSMT has been selected as a recipient of a HealthForceOntario grant to support a project called Improved laboratory testing and proficiency for better patient care by the health professions of Ontario – a pilot project in North East LHIN.  The project will result in an interprofessional symposium in Sudbury in September 2009 to facilitate transfer of knowledge amongst healthcare providers who perform laboratory functions outside the laboratory.

HealthForceOntario, a human resource initiative of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, will provide $146,540 toward the support of this innovative project under its “Optimizing Use of Health Providers’ Competencies Fund” program.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank HealthForceOntario for recognizing that laboratory functions and the work of laboratory professionals are critical to quality patient care.  More information about this will be posted on the OSMT website as the project progresses.
